to you all from siena
Hi All,
Just thought we would sent a quick email to say hi and let you all know that we are still kicking. Not sure where our last message left off, so I will try and fill in the last few days at least then you will get an idea of how things are going.
We left the Greek islands about 10 days ago to begin our busabout around Europe...mostly in Italy. Unfortunately on our way to the airport we got stung with a 10 Euro fine each for not having the correct ticket. Nice little cash cow for the Greeks!!!
We landed in Munich and made our way to the hostel where we were to begin our busabout. Didn't get to see much of Munich, but it looks like a cool place. Anywhere that appreciates the drinking of beer as much as they do can't be all bad!!
The first bus trip was a 10hr haul from Munich to Venice...This might sound long but it actually went fairly fast, the sun is up for so long that it feels like you leave at 11:00am and arrive at 4:00pm when you actually left at 8:00am and arrived at 7:00pm!!
Venice was nice, a floating city is pretty cool. We went to the main square, San Marco, where the pigeons rule. 500 Euro fine for kicking one!!! Don't know why, these pigeon are defiantly not on the endangered list!! Anyway we went up the bell tower and got some great shots of the city...see the blog. Navigation is kind of interesting in this old city. The best idea we found was not to try and figure out which street you are actually on!! If you do this you will think you are lost!!
We also managed to do all our laundry in Venice, which is good because the situation was getting desperate.
After two days in Venice we have moved on to Rome. Now this place has over 900 churches and has more historical sites than you can imagine. We went on an Ancient Rome tour and saw the Colosseum, Roman forum, Trevi fountain, Pantheon and Piazza Nueova. This was great because it gave us an insight to the ruins, instead of us looking at a bunch of rocks going "wow, look at that....thing?!?!?"
We went to St Peters Basilica which is the centrepiece of the Vatican city. This is where St Peter is buried and also many(maybe all) Popes are buried. We walked past a few of them including Jean Paul II. We did plan on going to the Sistine Chapel, however you might be surprised to know that the Chapel is closed on Sundays?!?! We were! Anyway we are already planning where we will travel once we settle in Aberdeen and this is definitely on the list.
Off to Siena tomorrow, we think it is going to be a little more laid back which will be good. We have done so much walking in Rome we need a holiday from our...holiday.
we are now in siena sitting amoungs the italians in a tobacco shop email you all
